I have a 2017 Camry SE and I’m looking for better gas mileage. There is a 2016 Sonata hybrid available in my area with 58,000 miles. What has been your experience with the 16 Sonata hybrid?
Engine will probably seize.

I’ve heard there are engine problems. That’s the biggest concern I have. My Camry has been bulletproof in the 5 years I’ve had it.

Yeah, I have a 2011 Camry that I’ve had for 8 years with very little maintenance, while my partner keeps buying Hyundais that keep falling apart and blowing up.
Hyundais are cheaply made with cheap parts. Her older 2013 Elantra GT had brake lines disintegrate while driving.
Hyundai and Kia are horrible, horrible cars. I’m in this sub just to convince people not to buy them.
Why not a Camry Hybrid?

I do not have a lot of cash to put down, so I’m hoping to cover most of the cost of a used hybrid with the trade value of my Camry. I will probably look at only used Toyota hybrids like the Camry, Avalon, or the Lexus E300h based on the replies here and further research. The Sonata hybrid I was considering was pretty close to the value of my vehicle. That’s why I was considering it.
Are you planning to keep the Camry or sell it? You might save on gas by switching to Hyundai hybrid, but you run the risk of engine issues and high oil consumption. From what I’ve seen with Hyundai, you either get lucky and everything is great or things go really bad and get pricey. Honestly, if your Camry is in good shape, I’m not sure if trying to save on gas is worth it in this case. You probably would save more by keeping the Camry, as it will last longer and you’ll get more miles from it if you take care of it.
If you do go with Hyundai, get an extended warranty. Also, check if there are records of maintenance that was done on time by the previous owner. Make sure to do the maintenance on time and keep the receipts in case you have an issue and need proof that maintenance was done. This is essential if you have engine problems later down the road and need to deal with the dealer.
@Westley
Thank you! I would have to trade it in. I am a little cash poor at the moment. I’ll probably stick with the Camry for now and start to look at other used Toyota hybrids.
We purchased ours 3 years ago with 80,000 km. We currently have 150,000 km and have only completed oil changes (should probably do transmission fluid). The car has been great, but I’ve recently read about the engine issues. I’m not sure how it works as there’s never been a recall for that on this car and it’s running great. I guess I’ll cross my fingers. Just bought a 2025 Santa Fe due to our experience with our Sonata.
