2019 Sonata Needs Engine Just Out of Warranty

Hello everyone. I made a post here a couple months ago about my mom’s car and the Theta II engine. The car had 92k miles on it and was suffering from the dreaded oil burning issue. We took the car into Hyundai and started getting the claim going so it’d still be covered. They immediately found that there was indeed an issue and performed the PCV cleaning service, which I assume is the first step to the claim (the car was at around 95k miles at this point). They then told us to drive the car for 1k miles and bring it back. We did so and sure enough the oil stayed at the max level. I’m a tech, so I ensured it myself before it was brought into the dealer. The car was given a clean bill of health and we were told the claim was closed. We did not receive an engine. Well now the car is at exactly 100,800 miles and the dreaded oil pressure light came on yet again. The car is just outside of its warranty window, so I’m really hoping we can get the motor goodwilled by Hyundai of North America. Does anyone have any advice for this situation or at least any way for me to directly contact corporate Hyundai myself? Thanks.

There was a class action with the Theta II engines… you might be covered.

I’m hoping so. I just know a dealer will do anything to avoid warranty work.

Trade it in & don’t look back.

I told her not to get it from the start, trust me. Unfortunately, she got a really low rate because she purchased it pre-COVID, so anything she trades it in for will be almost double the monthly payments. Not only that, but she’s very upside down on the car as it is.

@Phoenix
Oh no!

Good luck to you!

I do not think that the oil-burning was covered under the class action. Unfortunately, the dealerships are massively overfilling the oil after the combustion chamber cleaning, which helps it to pass the 1k, no more than a quart burned, test. Simultaneously, with trying to make a claim with Hyundai, you might want to try doing an overnight piston soak with Berryman’s B12 (videos on YouTube) and then using Valvoline’s Restore and Protect oil, which is being reported by some to actually remove carbon deposits.
