Bought my 17 in late 18. Was a rental in previous life. In March of 20 it started burning oil. Did an oil consumption test. Somehow passed. In Jan of 22 the engine went. Dealership replaced it in 8 days with a brand new engine. No documentation needed. Theta II engine.
@Mal
Same issue except mine blew at 62k, and they said the 2nd owner warranty is only until 60k I was like I just paid $2k for the 60k mile service check and no one mentioned any engine issues. They said they’ll ask corporate if they will help out. They said they would cover 75% of the cost to replace the engine leaving me with a $1600 bill. Was told my timing belt is cracked and needs replacement for $400 as well. Obviously need a car, so said ok but can I do it in payments? They said I can pay $150/mo. Seemed to be best case, she said it would take 3 months for the repair to order the parts, etc. Said they’ll give me a loaner if my insurance is 100k/300k/100k coverage. Gave me a 2024 Sonata Cruz. After a week they called saying, hey I know we said 3 months but we had an extra engine at the shop already so it’ll be done tomorrow.
@Mal
I have a 2017 Sonata as well and it has started burning oil but the dealership has refused to approve an oil consumption test on the grounds that I’m not the original owner and it used to be a rental. They didn’t give you any issue with it being a rental?
@Kingsley
I’m in Ontario Canada. The dealership was amazing. Service guy even offered to tell me what to do if I wanted the engine to die quicker but I passed.

That’s awesome, and great to know. It does seem from what I’m reading that it’s very dependent on the specific dealer, so I will talk to some other dealerships.
Bought a 2013 Sonata in 2017 (second owner) and the engine eventually blew in 2020. Dealerships quoted me $5k to replace the engine, thankfully I found out about the recall and the dealership replaced it free of charge. Car still running today with almost 180k miles on it.
I own a 2014 Sonata that I bought in 2018, and I wouldn’t buy a pre-owned Sonata. The engine replacement is a mess right now, and the probability of getting stolen is high. Not worth the headache imho.
