Considering Getting a Hyundai Sonata

I see it as a less expensive Camry. Do y’all enjoy your Sonatas? Is there anything I should know or be aware of before buying one?

I have a 2024 Sonata N-Line, and the car is great. It definitely looks better than both the Camry and the Accord, and the interior is superior too. Performance is better with the 2.5L turbo. I have about 7k miles now and have had no issues at all; yes, I know I haven’t had it long, but the reliability and oil issues you hear about are from the old engines, which are different from this one. The N-Line has fewer features than the limited trim, but the limited trim has performance if that matters to you. The N-Line also has an 8-speed DCT, which is unusual at first until you get used to it.

I loved my 2020 Hyundai Sonata. I downgraded to a Hyundai Elantra, smh. The Sonata has more space and is bigger.

I love my 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. I average 52 to 55 mpg.

I love my 2022 Sonata Hybrid Limited with 40k miles. I average 43 mpg.

I was looking at the 2024 hybrids. I just wish the dealer could have worked to make the deal. It was a very nice car.

I have a 2021 Sonata hybrid. It’s a fantastic car.

Still driving my 2011 Sonata. Except for the oil issue, the car is really nice.

I have a 2011 as well. No oil issues. I had to fix the ABS and replace a few parts that wear out on older cars this year, but I’ve never had any major problems. Turbo engine with a lifetime warranty. I’ll keep fixing the little stuff forever at this point.

@Tate
The oil issue is only on the 2.0 and 2.4 liters, not the turbo one. I just keep filling it and use thicker oil than recommended, and I’ve had no issues so far (knock on wood).

Is the oil issue present in the 2023 model?

@Sloane
No, that issue was resolved in 2020.

I had a 2006 Sonata and traded it for a 2016 PHEV Sonata, which is still going strong. I do miss the V6 in the 2006, as it had some decent power that the current one lacks. The only issue I had with the 2006 was that the alternator went out at about 60k miles.

I’m on my 4th Sonata, a '21 Limited. None of the others failed; I’ve just moved on and up. We take big road trips, so I installed OpenPilot in it. That’s a game changer. I do wish the car had automatic high beams, though. Six months after buying it, I heard about the expanding gas tank issue. It hasn’t happened to me yet, but I’m keeping an eye out for symptoms.

Got a 2019 white Sonata, and I love mine. No problems until the white paint started flaking off the hood.

I assume you’re considering new, not used? Avoid any pre-2019 Sonatas with the 2.4L Theta Engine. The post-2019 models with the 2.5L Smartstream engine are looking much better. They also come with a ‘normal’ 8-speed automatic, which many in this class do not.

If you get used, avoid the 2.4 GDI; you might get lucky and they run forever, but it is very likely to consume oil. The only reason I would consider one is if it just had a new motor from Hyundai and someone dumped it because they got frustrated. A cheap one with a fresh engine might be worth it, but I’d still check the oil whenever I stop to fill up.

Honestly, just get a Toyota. My Sonata engine is failing, and it’s a 2017 that just hit 100,000 miles.
