Got my car stolen right in front of my apartment

Got my car stolen right in front of my apartment—doors locked, alarm set—and then found dumped in a high school parking lot just a few miles away. :woman_facepalming::woman_facepalming: Who knew my make and model is #2 on the list of easiest cars to steal? Definitely not buying a Hyundai again. :-1:

You kidding me? This has been happening for like 5 years now. Kia boys? Hello!!

So when this happens, what does the insurance plan to do? Because I’m pretty sure that car is not drivable anymore.

Depends if you have the coverage for it! I used to do insurance brokering in Alberta, and this would fall under our comprehensive coverage option (fire, theft, vandalism, wildlife impact, and hail). Basically, it’s sort of like coverage for anything you can’t foresee happening, like freak weather or random wildlife.
If it’s deemed repairable or a write-off would be up to the insurance company and the adjuster they send out though, so I can’t give any insight on that.

Varies wildly depending on the insurance carrier and state. In most cases, this will be covered under comprehensive if the person chooses to make a claim but will mean the person’s vehicle is blacklisted from obtaining normal car and home insurance and locked to high-risk driver policies or state-assigned insurance for the next 5-10 years.

@Denny
T-T I had to file a claim with my insurance over an attempt like this, but they never got my car to drive because it had the immobilizing thing inside, so it was put under vandalism instead of theft. Am I cooked insurance rate-wise?

Mine was found after about 3 weeks. Got towed by a private company for being illegally parked, ran the plates, and found out it was hot; the local PD/Sheriff had it impounded. Insurance had it towed to a local repair shop. They gave an estimate on body damage and repairs to the ignition system. It came in under the totaled threshold (somehow), and was slated to be a repair.

Bonus: I was doing one last inspection and getting what remained of my belongings out of the car when I noticed some stuff in the cup holder. Turned out it was meth, confirmed by the repair shop manager. Mentioned it to my insurance adjuster in passing during what should have been our final call, we had somewhat become close over the few weeks since we were going back and forth on a payout since my car was found a few days before the payout was set to be sent. She said ‘this changes everything’ and asked me to provide photos. This happened in California, and apparently, the insurance would also have to be on the hook for cleaning up the car if there was any indication that meth was smoked in the car, which there clearly was. The cost to have the car ‘de-methed’ was enough to kick my damages over the threshold. I was given a congratulatory ‘your car is totaled’ by my adjuster. I miss her lol.

This is only an issue for older Kias and Hyundais :slight_smile: replace your ignition with a Ghost Key, you avoid paying 1K for a new ignition and avoid future thefts.

@Renny
I’m looking into this right now!

1st time uh … join the club we meet on Thursdays… file a settlement claim before the 11th.

@Koa
Thanks, yes welcome.

I am getting on that ASAP.

You never got the update, huh?

How long have you had the car?

Only a little over a year.

So did you Google the car before you bought it? Ask around about it? Anything??

Kia Boys have been active for YEARS.

I feel you, my car (2016 Sonata) just got stolen for the second time in 5 months after 4 years of no issues at all. Going to be trading it in as soon as I get it back from the shop. I almost wish insurance would’ve totaled it instead of even fixing it.

@Drew
That’s my exact make and model :cry::cry: I’m definitely going to just get rid of it and get something else.

Why didn’t you use the club? Looks like you have one on the floor in the back seats.
