Any reason you chose the Limited over the 2.0T? I always see the limited models with the regular sunroof and don’t get why people would choose that over a 2.0T with a panoramic roof.

I totaled my car in the fall of 2010, and the turbo wasn’t yet available at any of my local dealers.
My son was gifted a 2013 Sonata. Three days ago while he was driving, the engine suffered unexpected catastrophic engine failure. He wasn’t even able to get the car completely off the road. The engine has 114,450 miles on it. Had it towed to a local shop, and have been told it needs a new engine. I contacted a local Hyundai dealer and it’s been towed there. Dealer said they’ll take pictures and send them to corporate and will let me know if the engine will be covered under warranty. Current warranty is 10yrs, 120k miles.
Before calling the dealer I spent quite a bit of time doing research, and there are certain years that Hyundai recalled engines and extended their warranties. LOTS of very similar stories to ours out there. Not hard to find them with just a little time on Google.
I’m expecting Hyundai to do the right thing but I’m prepared to fight. That said, so far, Hyundai has been good…but I still have my fingers crossed.
@Mica
You will certainly be given a new engine. Make sure they reimburse you for the towing fees. May I ask if all the recalls have been done on your car yet?

Thank you for replying.
I don’t know for certain. My ex-father-in-law purchased it in December of '19 for my son. I’m not aware that my ex received any recall notices. She would have told me and we certainly would have responded to one. We’ve responded to recalls before on another vehicle years ago.
Towing has been handled by AAA.
Odd thing, and I drove it last - 2 miles to get it off the road and to my house - is the Hyundai dealer said the battery was dead and I’d have to pay for a new one so they could start it?
@Mica
I’m not sure about the battery. But for recalls, we can always be proactive by typing the VIN on Hyundai’s website as that might prevent the failure. Also, I read that 5W-30 oil and a Hyundai OEM oil filter will also help protect the engine.
@Reese
Thank you again. I was able to input VIN, and it appears it’s covered. Although, I’m a glass is half full kind of guy haha. Beer mug is always full, but glass is half empty until I’m pleasantly surprised otherwise. Thank you my friend, and have a great Sunday! You’ve been very helpful.
Well I’m not the first owner but 145K miles, no recall, absolutely no engine issues. Definitely a rare case but I’m happy about it.

145k miles is an impressive number. Good to hear that!
@Reese
I’d be lying if I said I’m not at least a little anxious about it, but considering it’s gotten this far I doubt I’ll have major issues with it soon.

Same here bro. I’m doing a 2000 miles road trip soon and I’m so paranoid. But I’ll have it serviced before going and yolo.
I have a 2012 Tucson with 141,000 miles. Bought it brand new. My main computer went at 100,300 miles, the dealership completely covered it under warranty. I’ve had no other issues, I feel lucky!
I’m on my second engine and it’s burning oil like crazy I just stay on top of it… I have around 193,000 miles; my 1st engine seized up around 104,000 miles.
I will never buy another Hyundai Sonata. Although their transmissions are great. I never changed the oil and it’s still going. After I missed the first service (the dealer) told me not to touch it.
I’m worried!! There is a Hyundai Sonata 2012 with a 30-mile new engine for $5,000; everything else supposedly works great idk what to do.
I still have the original 2012 engine.
Mine is a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Limited with 225,000 km and driving great and smooth. Been using high mileage fully synthetic oil regularly. I love it.
2012 Hyundai Tucson, 191,000 miles. Runs super smooth.
