Hi
I bought a used Hyundai Sonata from CarMax around May 31st, and while it was still under warranty, I checked my oil and found none. I took it back to CarMax, and they sent it to Hyundai, who said I had a cracked oil pan. They replaced it at no cost, but then I started the oil consumption testing process.
They refilled my oil and told me to drive 1000 miles and return. After driving that distance, they said the oil consumption was still too high and suggested cleaning the combustion chamber. They refilled the oil again, and after another 1000 miles, I dropped it back off.
Now here’s why I’m posting. Hyundai is saying I need a new engine (the car had around 91,517 miles at that time; I bought it at about 84k), but they won’t cover the cost. CarMax said they would pay for the replacement but are now hesitant about giving me a new engine and would prefer a used or remanufactured one instead. Has anyone gone through something similar, and what was the outcome?
From what I know, Hyundai usually opts for new engines over rebuilding. They generally make it cheaper to replace parts instead. If you do get a refurbished engine, make sure you check on the certification and warranty to ensure it’s a good deal
I had a new engine put in at the dealership after they ran the standard tests at 64k miles. It took about a week and they gave me a loaner car. That solved my oil consumption issues, and it’s still running great 10k miles later
They no longer send out new engine units as complete assemblies, and it’s likely their technicians might not have the skills needed to put an entire engine together
