Just Got an 08 with under 40k miles from my mom. Any advice

My mom is finally retiring from driving at almost 73, and she just gave me her 2008 Sonata with low mileage. I have a 2010 Honda Fit with 140k miles that I was hoping to upgrade one day to something with heated seats or built-in Bluetooth, maybe both.

Will the Sonata trade in or sell for anything decent? Is it possible to trade the Sonata plus my Fit for something nicer?

What can I do to make the 08 Sonata more enjoyable? I know I need to take care of it, and if I do, I might be driving it for a decade. I just can’t picture myself in that car in 2035.

Edit: Fine, I know what I have to do. I’ll keep it and drive it until I’m as old as my mom. I’ve never had a car payment, and I’m 40. I’ve got a mortgage instead. This is my first post in this forum, and it seems like good people here.

I’d happily trade my 2016 Sonata with 119k miles for your 2008. Mine has heated seats and a sunroof

But honestly, the trade-in value won’t be much, maybe around 2k. It’s better to just drive and enjoy it. Being car payment-free feels great

I’d love to have a car like that with under 40k miles.

Consider installing a new head unit with Bluetooth and save whatever you’d spend on a car payment. Your future self will appreciate it

Keep it! A car is just a tool, don’t waste money unless it’s really necessary

I suggest getting it detailed on a budget, DIY installing a good Carplay/AndroidAuto screen, and adding heated seat covers. Drive it for another 60k miles and save your money

I have the same model but a V6 version with 195k miles. It’s still running strong with some aftermarket upgrades. There’s a good market for parts as these cars have a strong community and accessories available.

Check these sites for parts:

You could sell it for about 5-7k if you do it yourself. Use KBB to check your car’s value.

In my opinion, this car is in a great spot for value. Similar model Camrys and Accords are more expensive for not much reason. It’s a large, comfortable ride for longer trips, unlike smaller cars. You can fit adults comfortably and move furniture easily with it too.

And, it should last you a very long time with good care.

This car is a smart financial choice, as it rarely loses value. Sure, get a newer one if you want extra features, but you’ll spend a lot more for that comfort and size.

Pro tip: consider getting a remote start installed. You won’t need heated seats if the car is already warm

I have an 08 as well and I’m almost at 200k miles. Mine has seen better days, but it drives great and is super reliable. I’ll keep driving it until it gives out

I got a 2007 GLS in 2020 and drove it daily for 4 years. I bought a truck but still drive the Sonata weekly. It’ll be my daughter’s car when she’s ready.

Keep the Sonata; it’s one of the best generations made. They’re cheap to operate and insure. I’ve replaced minor parts for under $100, and it’s really easy to find the stuff you need.

Just a heads up, it has some common issues like squeaky upper ball joints and rear brake calipers sticking.

Make sure to change the transmission fluid and flush the brake fluid, and replace the coolant regularly. If you haven’t changed the oil in a while, do that too.

Also, check out Hyundai-Forums.com for more info. The Sonata section there is really useful

Where do you live? I’d consider buying it from you. You won’t get a good deal from a dealer. It’s pretty much worthless there.
