I’m a first-time car buyer considering a used 2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited. It has 64,000 kilometers, around 39,000 miles, and the carfax report looks good with no accidents, but there’s only one service record at 27,000 kilometers. I’m looking at a dealership in Canada with a price of about $16,000 plus taxes, and they’re offering a one-year powertrain warranty.
However, I’ve been reading many posts here, and most of them recommend staying away from Hyundais due to serious engine issues. My budget is around $15,000 to $17,000, and this seems like the best option. Other reliable brands like Honda and Toyota are priced between $25,000 to $30,000 for similar mileage. The only other solid choice I see is a Mazda3, which costs $18,000 to $20,000 for a used one from 2016-2019.
I’m feeling pretty unsure about this purchase, so I’m asking for some guidance. Also, on the engine recall website, it looks like 2015 Sonatas aren’t included, so maybe they avoid the faulty engine issue.
I sold mine at that mileage last December to avoid engine failure. There are stories of people who relied on their warranties, only to have them denied when the engine failed. They ended up broke and without a car. That’s not something I want to read about as your next post.
You’re looking at the recall website, which isn’t just a recall but rather a lifetime warranty if conditions were met when they failed. Here’s a link to a discussion for more insight.
@Ren
I did a test drive and was impressed with the car’s interior for its age. But since you all suggest avoiding it, I’m now thinking of going with a Mazda. What are you trading in for?

I got a 2021 Sonata Limited. I moved from their worst engine to one of their best. Plus, I’m a big user of OpenPilot, which is well-supported in my '21 model.
Don’t do it. I have a Sonata SE from the same year. It burns oil, so I have to refill every time I fill up. I’m dealing with electrical issues too, having to jump-start it regularly. It’s frustrating. My engine might fail at any moment. Look for a more reliable vehicle.
