I’m preparing for a 1,200-mile road trip in my 2024 Sonata and would appreciate advice from anyone who’s done something similar. How was your experience? What should I check on my car before heading out? Any tips or recommendations would be really helpful.
If you’re getting your car serviced before the trip, try to do it at least a week or two in advance rather than right before you leave. This way, you’ll have time to address any issues that might arise after the service. Also, adjusting your seat position slightly during long drives can help prevent soreness. Safe travels!
Last year, I drove across the country and back in my 2017 PHEV. The car performed well, without any issues, which is great for a road trip. My only minor complaint was some discomfort from sitting for long periods, but that’s expected with extended driving.
Before your trip, make sure to check and top off fluids, and confirm your oil is good or change it if necessary. Since your car is newer, it should be fine. Also, check your tire pressure (find the recommended levels inside the driver’s door) and ensure you can add air on the road by bringing a pump and testing it beforehand. If you have a spare tire, practice putting it on in advance; it’s much easier to learn in your garage than on the roadside.
As a CDL holder, I suggest considering a DOT pre-trip inspection, which, while meant for commercial vehicles, could still guide you through checking essential items before long drives.
Make use of all your driver assistance features, check your fluids and tires, and relax while enjoying your trip.
I have the same car with the original engine at 162,000 miles, and I wouldn’t hesitate to take it on a trip. I’ve done a few 1,000-mile weekend trips without issues. You mostly hear from people with problems, but many others on the road have no issues at all.
For every person who has a vehicle problem, there are many more who don’t. My car has had no issues at 77K miles, and I don’t anticipate any (knock on wood). I drive it to and from Pittsburgh annually, which is about a 700+ mile round trip.
