What Are Your Favorite Songs by Sonata Arctica?

Of course, our favorite songs change all the time; we listen to one song for a while and then we grow tired of it for up to years.

But one way to answer is by asking yourself this question: “Which Sonata Arctica songs have given me the best feeling or which song have I listened to the most for a long period?”

I’m very fond of almost all of their songs but my favorites of all time must be: [Wolf & Raven], [Last Drop Falls] and [Blank File].

Right now though, I’ve been listening a lot to [White Pearls, Black Oceans] and thus would be my favorite as of right now.

From my teen years to today, my favorite is still ‘The End of this Chapter.’ I know people talk about Sonata going away from speedy power metal as a disappointing aspect of the band, but I have always largely preferred the mid-paced songs. I love ‘Wolf and Raven,’ ‘The Cage,’ etc. too, but I prefer stuff like this, ‘Somewhere Close To You,’ ‘It Won’t Fade,’ ‘Among The Shooting Stars,’ ‘The Last Amazing Grays,’ etc. just good melodic music. But ‘TEotC’ is still my favorite.

And on their new singles so far I’ve really been digging ‘Dark Empath.’ ‘First in Line’ is good, and I enjoy it, but not what I’m here for, I guess you could say. ‘Monster Only You Can’t See’ is solid too but probably my least fav so far on the new stuff.

@Harley

I know people talk about Sonata going away from speedy power metal as a disappointing aspect of the band.

I don’t think that anyone means the slower “ballads” on early Sonata albums by this. Yeah, these songs are slower paced, but they still have the power and energy. I also love ‘TEotC.’

If it’s favorite song then: ‘White Pearls Black Oceans’

If it’s favorite song per album it’s:

Ecliptica: ‘Blank File’

Silence: ‘False News Travel Fast’

Wintersheart Guild: ‘Gravenimage’

Reckoning Night: ‘White Pearls Black Oceans’

Unia: ‘Fly With the Black Swan / Paid in Full’ (God I love that keyboard melody)

The Days of Grays: ‘Juliet / In My Eyes You’re a Giant’

Stones Grow Her Name: ‘Only the Broken Hearts’

Pariah Child: ‘Larger Than Life’

The Ninth Hour: ‘Till Death’s Done Us Apart’

Talviyo: ‘Whirlwind’

And for now from the singles I like more ‘Dark Empath,’ but ‘First in Line’ is the better single from the new album.

Favorite song - ‘White Pearl, Black Oceans…’

I’ll jump on the per-album trend though as well.

Ecliptica: Letter to Dana

Silence: The End of This Chapter (love me some Caleb saga songs)

Wintersheart’s Guild: The Ruins of my Life

Reckoning Night: White Pearl, The Boy Who Wanted to be a Real Puppet, Don’t Say a Word (Impossible to pick just one from this album)

Unia: Caleb

The Days of Grays: The Truth is Out There

Stones Grow Her Name: Wildfire - Part 2 or The Day (Weak album IMO, but between these two)

Pariah’s Child: What Did You Do in the War, Dad?

The Ninth Hour: We Are What We Are

Talviyo: Demon’s Cage

AA 1: Wolf and Raven

AA 2: Gravenimage

@Dane
‘The Ruins of My Life’ is sooooo good.

I can’t pick a fav lol. I can pick a fav from each album:

Fullmoon

Wolf and Raven

Victoria’s Secret

White Pearl Black Oceans

To Create a Warlike Feel

Flag in the Ground

Alone in Heaven

X Marks the Spot

Till Death’s Done Us Apart

Whirlwind

Some of those barely made number one; it’s very hard to choose :heart:.

@Micah
I absolutely love all of those songs!

:heart::heart::heart: I’m really loving the new singles! I just hope it’s YouTube quality / my TV causing the guitars to somewhat overpower Tony’s vocals.

@Micah
Tony’s vocals are powerful enough from before, hehe. The new singles are great, especially ‘First in Line’ in my opinion.

Probably ‘Broken.’ It’s the one I have loved for the longest time.

I’m a very huge fan of their ballads. ‘Shy’ is one of their best, imho.

Some songs I love because of one specific lyric, like ‘On the Faultline.’ (We have the roads within ourselves to countless paradises.)

One that will always stay in my heart is ‘Replica,’ because it’s the one that introduced me to them.

Favourite Speed Songs: ‘Weballergy,’ ‘Blank File,’ ‘San Sebastián (Revisited),’ ‘The Cage,’ ‘Victoria’s Secret’

Favourite Ballads: ‘The Misery,’ ‘Last Drop Falls’

Favourite Epics: ‘White Pearl Black Oceans,’ ‘Larger Than Life,’ ‘The End of This Chapter’

Favourite Wildcard: ‘Half a Marathon Man’

A lot of Sonata Arctica songs inspire personal stories for me, so I get a lot of inspiration, especially from their slower songs like ‘As If the World Wasn’t Ending’ and ‘Breathing.’

But I’m also a huge fan of rock, and ‘Stones Grow Her Name’ has a lot of my favorites (yes, even ‘Shitload of Money’).

It’s kinda hard to pick because the genres are so varied, so there’s a time and mood to fit best. But I guess if I thought in terms of the most played song, it’s probably ‘Wildfire II.’

@Kelsey
Rock and Stone, everyone!

The End of This Chapter.

Many others have given fantastic answers, so I’ll just add my simple one: The Rest of the Sun Belongs to Me. Just a kickass chorus.

@Reese
The first time I heard this song was in Acoustic Adventures, and I thought it was a new song for that album. So when I put SA on shuffle and the original came up, I was surprised at hearing the same lyrics, but both songs sounded so different.

@Kelsey
Lol, I had the same experience. I thought it was so neat that they were opening up an acoustic renditions album with a great melodic original song to set the stage for the rest of the songs. Consequently, when I heard the original version later, I actually didn’t like it. I still don’t. :joy: It’s musically so much less interesting to me. I love the acoustic rendition though.

@Harley
Same, to be honest. A lot of people like their earlier power metal stuff, but for me, it can get very discordant. I can still listen and enjoy it, but if there’s a slower version (like ‘Wolf and Raven’), I’d tend to like the slower one more.

Oh gosh, I have so many!!!
But if I have to choose ONE, like gun to my head, PICK ONE, I would say ‘Paid In Full.’
