Which is generally the better car? elantra or sonata?

hi guys, i’m a first time hyundai owner i own a 23 elantra sel and i really like it, no issues so far thank god lol i upgraded from a 08 honda civic which was an amazing car so i was def skeptical transitioning to hyundai bc of the rep they get when it comes to reliability and the theft issue but here we are lol did i make a good choice getting an elantra instead of a sonata?

also if anyone also owns a 23 elantra, hows ur experience so far?

thanks guys!

Sonata. Bigger engine I had one and loved it. Also had Elantra, small engine. Sonata is a smoother ride. However, for the price of either one I would get a 23-24 Tucson. I have a 23 AWD Limited and love it.

My wife has a 23 Tucson and she loves it too. I quite enjoy it as well. Imo it seems to be a very well made car.

We replaced my '15 Accent hatchback with a '23 Tucson, and I took over driving my wife’s '13 Sonata. No regrets. Both of our current vehicles are great rides, although the dog prefers the Sonata due to the heated rear seats…

@Vann
Idk… Been hearing a lot of bad rep for those theta engines.

Honestly, every vehicle has some kind of defect in their engine.

Elantra is the McDouble, Sonata is the double quarter pounder with cheese.

That said, I had the 2022 Elantra HEV Limited and it was a gorgeous car inside and out. Just couldn’t escape the cheaper bones of the model; the seats and interior were so cool.

It really just comes down to what you can afford and trim you get for what you’re looking for. I personally would go with the V6 Sonata, but it’s easy to pick that when it’s not my own money being spent.

I bought the base trim 22 Sonata basically because I needed a car and that was one of very few available at the time. I love it. Spacious, classy interior, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, looks great and gets amazing mileage. If you don’t need the room and want to save money, try the Elantra, but otherwise I think you do get your money’s worth with Sonata.

I have a 23 Elantra hybrid limited that I love. I’ve had it since the first week of June and thoroughly enjoy it.

I have a 23 Sonata. Sonata is considered a higher grade than Elantra for several reasons – more space, stronger engine, smoother ride, etc etc. But Elantra does well too. Its looks are definitely better than Elantra.

Elantra is equivalent to a Civic, Sonata is equivalent to an Accord. How much room do you want inside? More room go, Sonata. You don’t care about the room, you want better gas mileage? Go Elantra.

I’ve got a 23 Elantra N-line, only 6k miles so far but it’s fucking fun to drive.

Personally, if size wasn’t an issue, I’d pick the Elantra just because I think it looks better. N line if possible.

Same year, then go with the Sonata. Elantra is always a step down.

You’ll figure it out…

The backseats in Sonatas are HUGE! I switched from a Sonata to a Tucson and I have to say the Sonata had a lot of space. Very well designed.

We drove many Hyundai rentals when traveling. Once I jumped fields and was time to buy a new car, she chose a 17 Elantra SE. Best damn car I’ve ever owned. 100% reliability and drove her 189K over 5 years. When it was time to buy a new car for her again, we went to the 21 hybrid, one of the first ones off the line. It has been also wonderful. Only things so far that have gone wrong were the 12v battery and the radio got bricked during an update, both handled under warranty. The 21 is a huge jump over the 17, but then again we went from SE to Limited. It rides very nicely although yes, the Sonatas are more cushy as if riding on marshmallows. They also handle like, well like a car on marshmallows, so there are pros and cons (we did upgrade the iron-like stock rubber to soft continental summer compound tire as soon as we got it as I always do). It also comes with a spare tire, btw! Nowadays this feature is disappearing. I had to purchase an aftermarket spare for my 23 Genesis GV60. $26K car has a spare and my $70K car doesn’t, go figure. Anyway, the 24 models, both Elantra and Sonata, were updated and look sharp. Can’t go wrong with either, but this is the last hurrah for the Sonata. I believe they are discontinued after this generation.

The new Sonatas with the 2.5 Smartstream are good. The old ones are not good.

Both old and new Elantras are good.
