Installing a cold air intake and the stock intake has a box we can’t figure out the purpose of. Any insight would be appreciated.
Must be the resonator.
The purpose of a resonator in an air intake system is primarily to optimize the flow of air into the engine, enhancing performance and efficiency. Here are some key functions of a resonator:
- Sound Dampening: Resonators help to reduce unwanted engine noise and create a more pleasant sound profile. They can modify the frequency of the intake sound, making it less harsh.
- Tuning Airflow: By creating specific air pressure waves, resonators can improve the air-fuel mixture entering the engine. This tuning can lead to better combustion efficiency and power output.
- Enhancing Performance: In certain engine speeds, resonators can help increase the amount of air entering the combustion chamber, contributing to better acceleration and overall performance.
- Reducing Turbo Lag: In turbocharged engines, resonators can help maintain boost pressure during shifts, reducing turbo lag and improving throttle response.
- Improving Fuel Economy: By optimizing the air intake process, resonators can help improve fuel efficiency, allowing the engine to operate more effectively under various conditions.
Overall, the resonator plays a crucial role in both the acoustic and performance aspects of an air intake system.
Not sure, was it plugged into anything? Might be mass airflow sensor? Mounted to anything besides the intake?
I know this is a Sonata 2019. Now that looks like the MAf sensor. It could also be where the O2 sensor goes. If your car is the turbo GDI, it’s possible that’s a waste gate.
I have that on my 2012 Hyundai Sonata, no clue either.
Ok, I will ask. What is on your shoe?

Looks to be a vape. Any vape I’ve ever seen with a screen is destroyed; made by Apple I guess.
You already had a cold air intake, likely forced ram air as well. There is no cold air under the hood. Are you going to install a proper sealed box to prevent it from sucking hot air from the engine bay?
@Jae
Exactly. “Cold air” intake, my ass…

Quite literally lol.
It’s the resonator. Used to take them out of all of my older cars since they had no sensors and were mostly used for sound damping the air intake. Not sure if they have sensors on them now for better airflow.
I don’t have the turbo version and I have this on my car. If I’m not mistaken, it quiets the intake when driving. Prevents you from hearing loud suction while you are on the gas.
