Are newer Hyundais reliable?

@Kiernan
I wish my shop had a foreman. It’s me and a bunch of high school kids and it’s just a free for all all day. I’m surprised more shit doesn’t break.

Sounds like you are the foreman lol.

My dealer sent me away when I wanted to change mine at 3500 intervals. Said Hyundai was not warranting engine failures due to too frequent oil changes. Completely nuts.

WTF? Sure, if it was done once a week or something, not 3500.

Got my first break-in oil change much earlier than this, dealer was happy to take my money. In Canada (winters), my dealer ‘recommends’ 6k km (3700 mile) changes at standard… exceeding the severe-service interval in the manual, they will take your money.

I change every 6 months regardless (winters), so happens this distance lines up about right in my instance. If I commuted an hour each way, I’d extend it.

He didn’t want to do the change and had nothing to do with Hyundai and warranties.

@Zenith
My thoughts as well.

You’re dealer is a moron lol. Too frequent oil changes have nothing to do with engine failure or any problems. Quite the opposite actually.

Thanks for your feedback everybody! :slight_smile:

My family has a 21 Sonata, 22 Elantra, 23 Tucson. So far have had zero issues with all of them. Biggest complaint was the dealership lost the second fob for the Elantra and had to wait about 6 months for it to arrive from Korea.

@Toryn
how long have you had the 23 Tucson? I really like that SUV but the hybrid engine failure system failure stories scare me.

To be transparent, I have only had it a couple of months, but so far no complaints. The 1.6 with the hybrid is very peppy and very smooth. I don’t know what generation engine this is, but I’m hopeful that they have ironed out the bugs from the older gens.

Better, but still nowhere near a Toyota or Honda. Genesis is very good though. My advice is to stay away from Hyundai. I have a 2020 Elantra, not bad for simplicity, economical, but the durability is trash! Better makes out there for just a bit more.

100% reliable so far on my '23 Elantra N-line.

Curious if your N-line is still going strong?

Still chugging along with no issues! About 12K miles now. I have a '23 Ford Lightning XLT that I drive most days as a company vehicle, the Hyundai is my personal car that only gets out on weekends.

My car is a year old and it is still fantastic.

They seem to be more reliable powertrain-wise. So many new models, designs, redesigns etc though. Seems like a lot of TSBs for most models.

The newer cars are very good. They use the new Smartstream II engine and not any of the other dead ones. Buy after 2021.

2020 uses Smartstream as well.

Not all 2020 models have them. They added this mid-year. So only half the year cars got them. I worked on and seen many without that new engine that was a 2020 model. I know all the 2021 and current have them.

So I had a 2019 Sonata brand new & all 4 years I had the car, never any issues. Got my regular maintenance appointments faithfully. Now I have a Tucson 23 & I’ve had less than 3 months & my wheel shakes like a stripper when I slow down.
