I just got a full synthetic oil change for my Sonata, how many miles will it last?

Sonatas also are known to burn oil.

Change your PCV valve. $15 on Amazon and extremely easy to change.

Not sure why I’m getting down voted. My 2.4 used to burn oil like a 1980s K10. A quart every thousand miles. Changed the PCV valve. Zero burned oil.

Considering you drive a lot of highway, 5,000 miles should be fine. But you have to check your oil level constantly and top it off as necessary. It has to be at the full mark at all times. In your case, in that car, the quality of oil doesn’t matter much; it is more about what the engine is doing to the oil. If there is a lot of fuel dilution, even 3,000 miles is a lot. But highway driving creates the ideal conditions for the oil and engine, so it can go further. Considering those engines are simply known to just blow, I wouldn’t push it further than 5k.

6 months or 5000 miles, whichever comes first… Check the level every week.

Are you still under warranty? If you’re in an area where the roads are salted, you need to follow the ‘severe’ maintenance schedule. Under that, you have to change the oil every 3500 miles, IIRC.

If you’re not under warranty, I’d suggest just every 5k.

I do my 2020 Elantra every 10,000 miles or so but I only drive 6 miles one way to work and 6 miles home.

Almost all of our driving falls under severe, which the owner’s manual says 3,700, but I think 3k is better. If I was only driving 5-7 miles at a time, as a retired mechanic, I’d probably change it more often than 3k, unless I planned to trade it off while still under warranty. Frequent oil changes are the cheapest thing to do to get the most out of any engine.

@Kai
Your retired. I don’t think you understand newer cars. My friend is a mechanic right now and my car is doing pretty good and I did three years of Doordash with it. I get my oil changed at the dealership every 10k miles or so.

@Bennet
I just retired last summer and understand engines. In your post you said you only drove 6 miles to work. You didn’t say anything about using it to deliver DoorDash, which is stop and go, which falls under severe service.

@Kai
I ended Doordash in 2022. I do only drive 6.7 miles to and from work and my mechanic works at the dealership and is a customer of mine. I sell State Farm insurance. We don’t cancel people that previously owned a Hyundai or Kia. We just don’t accept new cars.

@Bennet

Manufacturers don’t necessarily put in their owner’s manual what would actually make the car last the longest. They are in the business to sell cars, and they hopefully don’t want to have to pay for warranty work.

@Kai
When my car finally dies I’ll buy a new one. It’s paid off. I’ll probably get a Toyota next. I’m not into keeping cars for 15+ years.

First of all, what year and trim is your Sonata? In order to give you an accurate answer we need to know what engine your car has. Ideally, you should be following the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual and using the same type of oil it calls for. There’s a ‘Normal Schedule’ and a ‘Severe Schedule’. I would recommend following the severe schedule which means more frequent oil changes, but this also means less wear and tear in the engine. Remember, oil is cheap. A new engine is not. With Hyundai’s engine reputation lately, I would not extend maintenance intervals just because you can.

Depends on the year. Pre 2019 I would do every 3k. 2020 and newer every 5k maybe 7500 sometimes.

Check your owner’s manual. As a general rule for most cars 3k miles Standard, 5k miles Blend, 7k miles Full Synthetic. But certain Hyundais from some years burn oil like water so you might want to check that manual.

Just check your oil dipstick every 2k miles that will give you an answer.

I would bring it back after 5k miles for the next oil change. Do not push it to 7500.

It’ll last as long as the filter 5,000 MI.

P.S. Every oil change should have been full-synthetic… They don’t make ‘dinosaur oil’ in 0W-20.

Your car came with a manual, it also includes an oil change reminder system.

5000 miles/6 months on ‘severe service’ interval. 7500 miles/12 months on ‘regular service’ interval.
