A year or two ago, Hyundai found out that all their modern engines that used 5w20 oil are now using 0w20. This applies to all engines made in the factory and all cars currently on the road.
The oil used is what Hyundai recommends so there is no problem with it
@Murphy
Hi, do you know if this is true for Kia as well?

I can’t say for sure, but I think it does apply. The engines are very similar so I would guess it’s fine

Same idea, yes the oil recommendation will likely be the same. When I got my 2021 hybrid, I was surprised to find that the manual said to use 0W-16.
I think you’ll be good with that. (date sheet). Seems like good oil that meets the API SN Plus & GF-6 standard.
0w20 is what most newer cars use. Hyundai, Subaru, and Toyota use that standard. It won’t cause any harm.
If you have a 2.4 engine, 0w20 is fine. Hyundai usually suggests 5w20, but the 0w and 5w are the winter weight, meaning how the oil performs in cold temperatures.
The w20 is really what matters. If you go for a heavier weight in hot weather, it won’t hurt as much as people think. You might actually get a little benefit from it.
@River
The Theta II GDi 2.4 is the same engine in my 2017 Santa Fe Sport. I didn’t really research these engines before, but we didn’t have a choice at the time, and this was the best option we could afford. The engine had to be replaced before we bought it (around 136-137k miles), though I don’t know exactly what went wrong or how badly it failed. The previous owner claimed to have kept up with maintenance, but they didn’t allow the repair to happen under a recall, so who knows? For what it’s worth, I know her well enough to say she wasn’t great with car care at all…she just used it to haul her kids around. I just hope that with someone like me (who looks after cars pretty closely), the engine will hold up better than the last one.
@Parker
I know someone with a 2015 that takes care of their car, doing oil changes every 4,000 miles or monthly. Their engine still seized at 165k miles, and they even used fresh oil.
You might want to ask on a mechanic advice forum too
Did you ask the place that changed your oil? What is it supposed to be?

It should be either 5w-20 or 5w-30 fully synthetic. I tried calling them 3 times once I got home, but they didn’t pick up and their mailbox was full. They also included the previous owner’s personal info with my paperwork. I have their number, address, name, and email.

It should be just fine!!! Any engine that uses 5W-XX will run nicely on a 0W-XX. If your engine is turbocharged, then a 20 weight could be too thin…it needs to be at least a 30 weight or 40 weight.
I’m not sure if you mean that for older turbo engines, but I’m told to use 0W-20 for my 1.6T 2023 Kona.
It might just be that the advisor wrote the ticket wrong or parts billed the wrong oil, but the tech used the correct viscosity. FYI, I’m a Hyundai tech and I see this happen all the time.
@Haze
That’s a fair point. We updated the description to just synthetic without a weight after a customer returned their vehicle.
@Brice
Your car can handle that just fine. Depending on where you live, you’ll find that Hyundai dealers use different oils like 5w20, 0w20, 5w30, etc. Some simply change the type based on temperature or elevation. That’s a good deal for an oil change too!
Synthetic oil lasts longer and works better. In a Hyundai engine, this is good since they tend to use up oil and have weaker parts.
Hey poster,
Which engine do you have in your car will help figure out if the oil was right. Hyundai recommends 0W20 for the 2.4L naturally aspirated engines. If you have the 2.0L turbo, then 5W30 would be better. Hope that clears things up for you.
Take care
I usually tell people not to use a 20 weight oil in Hyundai engines, but if you do, 0w-20 is actually better than 5w-20. The base oil that gets it a 0w winter rating must be higher quality.
